Don't be sad 'Cause two out of three ain't bad

Yesterday while I was talking to Steve Ray he showed me some of the photos he'd taken in the morning. I must be about the only birder with a camera who hadn't been to Bossenden Wood and had a go at taking pictures of Nuthatch and Marsh Tit on "the baited log". Steve also had some shots of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers in the Wood.

Today I joined the list of snappers at this site. With a bag of bird food I arrived at around 8 a.m.and apart form the occasional dog walker I had the place to myself for a while. Very quickly Nuthatches arrived for their breakfast.

They were in and out quite quickly and I wasn't sure how many there were, but I think it was at least four individuals.

Second on the scene were at least two hyperactive Coal Tits. They were even faster at dashing in and out than the Nuthatches. As time went on both became rather less frenetic, as I guess they became more confident of the clicking that accompanied their every visit.

Out here in the woods, the bold Great Tit of the garden seemed to assume a much shyer personality and although one or two were constantly around the area it did take a while for them to come in and join the Breakfast Club.

No such worries for the Nuthatches, that were now prepared to forage on the ground in front of the sacred log.

Most of the birds coming in to the area where various tit species, though so far no Marsh Tit and a few Chaffinches, already in full song, so when this Blackbird hopped right by me and then up to the feeding area I was a bit surprised to see him.

The calls of Blue tits were ringing through the trees all round the wood, the only surprise was that they were far less frequent visitors than the Coal Tits and Nuthatches. 

My garden has been well stocked with Chaffinches, and a few are showing signs of getting to their summer plumage, but as far as I know none are nearly as bright as this chap who came in to see me. I did wonder if the garden flock are visitors that will leave our shores and head north and are therefore a bit behind the resident birds in Bossenden Wood?

During the morning I was joined by first Gary and then Mike, but not by any Marsh Tits. I decided to go and have a look round the wood in the hope of bumping into a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker or a Marsh Tit. I was unsuccessful in the former case, but did come across a group of Marsh Tits. I hadn't seen them until their "pichoo" call gave them away. I watched them for a while but they soon moved out of sight and earshot.

When I got back to the feeding area they'd got there before me and I got another short while with them before the again moved out of sight. Another walk round was again Lesser Spotless but as Meatloaf said, Two out of three ain't bad.

More Autumn moths

Birding

I had a long walk around Bockhill Farm and the cliff top this morning. It was pleasant but in all honesty not very productive. The stubble field that held the two Woodlarks on Saturday has now been ploughed. I did come across one Ring Ouzel at Gun site (Big Bruce) and I heard one Chiffchaff at the farm wood. Vis Mig (visible migration) was much slower than of late but there were a few small parties of Goldfinches, Chaffinches and Redpolls moving through.One group of 27 Siskins called noisily as they move north and there were at least two Reed Buntings, one of which landed briefly on a small hawthorn, but didn't wait for a picture. At least seven Pied Wagtails called their characteristic "chiswick, chiswick" overhead. I've noticed a bit of an influx of Pied Wagtails in the village, I saw six on various roofs the other day., . There were also about 20 Swallows flying around the cliffs near the cafe. A Woodlark flew low over the monument calling and may have landed somewhere on the Leas. In Paddock a there were a few thrushes, I noted  2 Mistle Thrushes, five plus Songs Thrushes, seven Redwings, half a dozen Blackbirds and one Fieldfare flying out of one hedge. Moving round the big field there was a flock of around 250 Starlings and I also saw four Jay moving along the trees at the site of the Freedown.Jays. Along the Droveway a small flock of Crests in the sycamores  included at least one Firecrest.

What's got four wings and four legs?

Yesterday I paid an afternoon visit to the Resharrow Scrape. Even when there's nothing particularly special to see there's something quite restful watching the comings and goings of the various species using the scrape for a wash and brush up or the odd snack. Even better is when you find you're sharing the hide with a couple of your oldest birding friends. It was nice to see Peter and Pauline Heathcote, down at the Observatory to give the Thursday Club talk.

At high tide a few waders occasionally drop in to join the regular Lapwings and Green Sandpiper. Yesterday we  were treated to a short visit from a Curlew. A common enough bird but always worth a close look.

Searching the reeds to the right of the hide the tell tale stripes on the head of a Snipe gave away its presence.

Today was a mixture of the same again and some new entertainment. Pete and Pauline were there and so was a Snipe, this time probing away at the far end. The entertainment was provided by a group of  raucous Little Egrets, at first there were four on view and eventually a fifth appeared.

At least two semed to be adults with black legs and yellow feet, while the others seemed to have paler legs and less colourful foot wear, We concluded that we were seeing a mixture of adults and first year birds.

One seemed to be very territorial, and it was intent on chasing one of the others round the scrape, while barking loudly. Despite being much smaller than the Grey Heron, Little Egrets seem to have an even louder and deeper voice.

The chasing suddenly turned into some sort of avian Poso Doble, good enough to rival any on Strictly Come Dancing.

Eventually the pursued bird escaped for a while and was able to settle down for a quiet feed. They are fun to watch as they lift one foot and vibrate it in the water, to disturb their potential snack items that are lurking in the mud.

Soon it was having to take evasive actions as its adversary re-appeared intent on driving it to a far flung corner of the scrape.

Against this competitive background other birds were coming in to drink. Groups of Starlings, Linnets and Meadow Pipits appeared and a few Yellow Wagtails dropped in to the edge of the reeds. It was good to see them as they are becoming less and less numerous as the years go by. They are no longer a common breeder in Kent and numbers on migration seem to be a fraction of what there were back in the sixties. When Pam and I lived in Dartford in 1966 we used to wander along the river Cray near to our maisonette. That autumn one of the reed beds was used as a roost by Yellow Wagtails and we counted over 200 coming in one night.

I can't resist photographing flying Lapwings, still one of the great sights in the Autumn and winter. It will be interesting to see what the long term holds for them on Worth Marshes with the RSPB project under way.

Fantasy Birding

Another fantastic day, and when walking in the sun in such stunning surroundings you can be forgiven if the odd day-dream flickers through your consciousness. There were birds around, but not as many as at the weekend when the visible migration was exceptional. This was well documented on the KOS Website by Jack, and there is even a picture of the assembled crew doing a seawatch.

Today there was still a good passage of House Martins and Swallows going through, but difficult to count as some seemed to be coming back to feed before continuing on their way. As group of around 12 Pied Wagtails fed together in the middle of the "big field" and Siskins could be heard passing over. My "problems" started when I got to Hope Point. There was a Dunnock, but in October why couldn't it have been Britain's first Siberian Accentor. If one could turn up in Sweden on the 10th October last year, why not Bockhill this year.

A Blue Tit interrupted my day dream, a Blue is just that and not at all easy to turn into an imaginary rarity.

But one of the Chiffchaffs, sure that could have obliged. A good date for one of the scarce or rare warblers, but still every one I looked at stubbornly remained a Chiffy.

Out at sea the slightly surreal sight of HMS Waverley paddling by added to the day. She was built in 1947 to replace her namesake, that was sunk at Dunkirk in 1940. In 1974 the The Paddle Steamer Preservation Society bought her for £1 when her operators could no longer afford to keep her going. She is now used for excursions during the summer months.

I walked on towards Kingsdown and decided to look at the Undercliff. There is often a Black Redsart there in autumn and winter and I fancied getting some photos. I didn't find one around the rocks at the beginning, a favourite place, but at the end of the path, a flick of red caught my eye as a bird landed on the sea wall. This Robin was feeding on the edge of the sea as it seeped through the wall, an unusual feeding area, but I've seen one down here before.

I've always though that this area would be perfect for finding a Pied Wheatear, it is still a week or so early for one in the south, but still possible. The cliffs looked magnificent from the end of the path, and with high-tide, hopefully any bird using the bottom of the cliffs for a feeding area would move on to the undercliff.

As I scanned I did find the adult Peregrine resting on a ledge about 300 metres away.

Then a Wheatear appeared on the sea wall. At first glance it looked just like a (Northern) Wheatear [brackets for Derek].

At second glance it still looked the same. Even if they're a common migrant they have two things going for them. They're nice looking birds, and because there are several rarities, that are very similar, they get well and truly looked at.

There is one important thing that you have to do when you are photographing a bird. You have to stay focused.

If you don't you find that the bird disappears and the white blob behind it turns into a pub. That isn't fantasy birding in this case, but a fact.

Another thought crossed my mind. The cliffs may be chalk, but after one turned up on the other side of the channel, these cliffs must be a good place for a Wallcreeper to turn up, I mean if Fairlight was suitable then Kingsdown must be a good.

A scam of the rock face did reveal another flash of red, but on the tail, not the wings, and there was my Black Redstart, determinedly staying half way up the cliff and refusing to pose like the Wheatear and Robin had done. May be next time a day dream will be fulfilled.

Species List for Eastern Venezeula

Not one of the most colourful Hummers, This Buffy Hummingbird was certainly one of the most confiding.

I've put a list below of species that I saw in my trip to Eastern Venezuela. I went with Birdquest, which although not a cheap option, meant that with a leader of the quality and expertise of Pete Morris I probably got to see several times more than had I gone on my own. The full trip report will appear on their site in the near future so I have just included what I personally saw. Those species with a star next to them were "ticks" for me. As I hadn't been to South America, north of Buenos Aires, or Central America, south of Belize before, there were an awful lot of new species for me, in fact it was somewhat mind blowing. Apart from a few hours when Montezuma had his revenge, some sore muscles and a few insect bites there were no real problems. If you do go to Caracas airport, make sure your luggage it totally secure, three of us lost some bit when odd side pockets allowed light fingered baggage handlers to get access to bits and pieces!
