The Dover Patrol

The granite obelisk, which commemorates the Dover Patrol, the naval personnel defended the Dover Straits during the first World War 1914-19. The 83ft monument was unveiled in 1921. The memorial was extended to include those of the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy who lost their lives sailing in the Dover Straits in the Second World War. Similar monuments stand at Cap Blanc Nez in France, visible from St Margaret’s on a clear day, and in New York harbour.
