Now I'm Sixty-four!

When the Fab Four released Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, few could have known what an icon for the age it would become. They started recording it on Dec 6 1966 and it was released on June 1st in the UK and the 2nd in the USA, in 1967. The album cover fascinated everyone, it was designed by British 'pop' artist Peter Blake, but few people noticed that I was whispering into Bob Dylan's ear. The list of the other people on it is long.
The sing-a-long song, when I'm Sixty-four, track nine, was funny, sentimental and perhaps a little sad, and was also featured on Yellow Submarine, but today the poignancy of this little ditty has arrived, with the date!

When I get older losing my hair
many years from now
will you still be sending me a valentine
birthday greeting, bottle of wine
If I'd been out till quarter to three
would you lock the door
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four

You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you

I could be handy mending a fuse
when your light have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings, go for a ride
Doing the garden,
digging the weeds
Who could ask for more
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four

Every summer we can rent a cottage
on the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck, and Dave

Send me a postcard,
drop me a line
stating point of view
indicate precisely what you mean to say
yours sincerely wasting away
Give me your answer
fill in a form
mine forever more
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four

If you were born in 1943 it is almost inevitable that any notable happenings on that day concerned WWII. As well as my birthday, the 2nd of April 1943 marked the end of the most successful U-boat of the war. The U-124 had sunk 48 allied boats (including the the British 4,093 ton Dartford, named after the town where I was born, that was sunk on 12th June 1942, sailing with convoy ONS-100), and severely damaged four more, but she met her end, 64 years ago on this day.

Best wishes on your Birthday, Tony!

Hope your garden grows, your bride still feeds you and your grandkids are not too heavy to sit on your knees ;-)

And I found you whispering to Dylan - you look like would be a part of his counterculture ;-)

Fun post!
