It think that it is very recent, the whiteness of the chalk and the fact that several bushes, swept down from the cliff face are still lying on top indicate that it's not been lying there long.
A slightly closer look shows just how much chalk has come down. I'm not sure what the current rate of erosion is, but if the sea levels rise as predicted we are sure to see much more of this.
