At the same time I'm living in hope that something will happen in the centre of the village to tidy the place up. I know that the post office had to close and that it takes time to get new developments under way, but in the meantime the high street looks a mess. I've always thought that people value their surroundings by the state they are in, it that is so we will all have a pretty low opinion of St Margaret's unless things in the centre improve.

Yes, it does look tatty, and so too was Kingsdown, which is partly the reason we moved away from the area a year ago. If I still lived there I would get a ladder and a bucket of cheap emulsion and paint that wall!
Tony, I agree that it's a bit of a mess but it's always difficult to get absentee owners to keep their properties in good shape (tangentially it's part of my day job in Thanet). The Parish Council could contact the owner and ask nicely for a coat of paint but I think any 'unilateral' action (as suggested tongue-in-cheekly by anon 19.07), however well-meaning, would probably be prosecuted as vandalism! The shop could do with a coat of paint too I noticed recently. I read something in the Parish Magazine about the village going environmentally friendly over the coming months and years, I'm sure effective maintenance and repair of all properties should be included in that.
