I'm always amused when things turn out to prove me correct. Of course it isn't so funny when it happens the other way round.
I was sitting in the hide at the Restharrow Scrape on Thursday when I was joined by three other people. As is usual at the moment. the first question was "have you seen the Water Rail" I replied in the negative and we all carried on searching the reeds. Fairly soon a Water Rail started calling, doing its "Chip Chip" call. "The Water Rail's calling" I said. No was the reply that's a Moorhen calling. I didn't like to say that after more than sixty years birding I knew the calls of both pretty well, so I was pleased when the Water Rail came into view, still calling.
