The interior of this beautiful Norman Church has
many interesting features. The belfry was possibly used by smugglers in the early 1800's. It is said that the parish Clerk combined official duties with a little smuggling and poaching but was too clever to be caught.
On some of the pillars there are carvings of ships, some 47 have been identified, but many are now indistinct. They were possibly done by mariners of the 14
th and 15
th centuries. Some crosses are also found and they may be ascribed to pilgrims on their way to Canterbury.

These details are great, do they allow rubbings to be taken?
Hi Pat, I don't know, but I suspect that since they are wearing away they may not want them touched. If you are really interested in the possibility I can enquire.
Thanks for venturing in and photographing. You were able to get a great, clear closeup of the inscriped cross. I wonder how long it took that person to do that--and why someone didn't stop them? These marks always bring up so many questions, don't they?
Your butterfly is very impressive. You'll have to post some camera techniques.
